What I read this week #2 | ADHD가 집중하는 법, 건강한 소셜 프로덕트, 가용성 캐스케이드, Artifact, 넥슨, 마이크로스트레스, Substack's new economic engine for culture,
What

Supercharging My Focus (with Help from AI)
GPT-powered journaling is changing my life

But of everything I’ve tried, one practice has consistently worked for me: writing. When I feel demotivated or have an impulse to do something outside my area of focus, I open up a blank page and write until I find clarity.
Network.

On Availability Cascades
“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed -- and hence clamorous to be led to safety -- by an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.” -- H.L. Mencken
https://pmarca.substack.com/p/availability-cascades-run-the-world?ref=kwondoeon.com
What is the purpose of social media? To propose and propagate availability cascades, both top-down and peer-to-peer. This is what happens when something goes “viral”; an availability cascade has formed and is running. Every original post or tweet is hoping to trigger the availability heuristic and generate a cascade; every favorite, like, reply, and retweet speads the cascade.
What is the purpose of a startup founder? A startup founder is an availability entrepreneur too! The purpose of a startup founder is to trigger an availability cascade around the company and its product — to put the product front and center in the popular consciousness in hopes that the availability heuristic is triggered and a cascade runs. Being “bad at marketing” means bad at doing this. Being “good at marketing” means good at doing this.
- Marc Andreessen

An Interview with Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger About Artifact

It turns out that a lot of people really like to read. I joke with Mike that there’s this earned secret that everyone thinks no one likes to read. Everyone’s like, “Oh, there’s this shift to video.” And it’s like, “Yes, video is growing in terms of time spent” but it turns out people really like to read. Now, do they read the full article? Not always. Do they skim it? Probably. But they do enjoy written content, especially when there are images in it and they can engage with the content. And we’ve been able to build a product that I think serves people in that specific job very well.
- Kevin Systrom
- Kevin은 세상에 더 많은 original, interesting, less of this gaming-the-algorithm content를 원한다고 한다.

Part II What Really Matters in Virtual Worlds: The Player
It’s not the visual veneer, it’s what you experience.

PARC의 ‘Smalltalk(최초의 오브젝트 지향 프로그래밍 구현체)’ 이전에는, 소프트웨어의 제작 비용이 매우 비쌌습니다.

A new economic engine for culture
What comes after social media as we know it
https://on.substack.com/p/2million?ref=kwondoeon.com
- Substack
Great work is valuable and deserves to be rewarded with money. That means that publishers should have a way to make a living, or even a fortune, from doing the work they believe in. Money is the fuel that makes the entire engine work, and it’s a healthier, more honest metric than “eyeballs” or engagement.
A free press and free speech are fundamental to a trustworthy media system. That means we take a hands-off approach to content moderation and instead support community moderation, where publishers set their own terms of engagement for their community, and readers choose which communities suit them.
Our goal is not merely to offer an alternative to social media, but to create the conditions for culture makers to produce amazing work that would never have been possible under the old systems. That doesn’t mean a wholesale redesign of the technologies, but it does necessitate a full reconsideration of the business models that are pushing those once-great platforms into ever more compromised territory. We believe that together we can build the most valuable media economy the world has ever known—an economy where value is measured not only in dollars but also in quality, in good-faith discourse, and in creating an internet that celebrates and supports humanity. That is the internet we want to live with. That is the world that we want to live in. Thank you, to all Substack writers and subscribers, for your continued help in trying to build it.

AI Techies!

But at the same time, I feel like something is lost by this approach. Optimization within known constraints cuts us off from the unknown — the influx of ideas from outside our echo chamber, the life experience that expands our perspective in ways we never could have anticipated, the friendship that opens us to a more universal understanding of humanity. And the failure to mingle with other social classes makes it hard to get involved in local politics and community activity in productive ways.

Followup To Why AI Won't Cause Unemployment
“Some people worry that AI will make us feel inferior, but then, anybody in his right mind should have an inferiority complex every time he looks at a flower.” —Alan Kay

- Marc Adreessen

The red price lines are for sectors like health care, education, and housing, which are extensively subsidized and regulated by the government, and also tend to have monopolistic/oligopolistic/cartel-like industry structures which are enabled and supported by the government. What happens if you subsidize a product whose supply is restricted? Its price rises. What’s restricting the supply? Regulation. This is the effect of most “consumer protection” regulations which may start with good intent, but are quickly hijacked by incumbent suppliers as protect themselves from new competition. This is why new bank creation virtually ended after the Dodd Frank law was passed. Many such cases.
